Prevent Duty Readiness 2025

The Prevent duty expects healthcare teams to spot concerns early and act proportionately. Refreshing pathways, training, and partnerships now keeps the practice compliant and protects people at risk of radicalisation.

Update referral pathways

  • Confirm local Prevent contacts, escalation routes, and referral forms with the local authority and police teams, then update safeguarding packs.
  • Map the internal flow from first concern to formal referral, including GP oversight and how advice is recorded.
  • Document out of hours contacts and national helplines so staff are never left searching for support.

Keep training current

  • Ensure Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP) or equivalent training aligns with role requirements across clinical and non clinical teams.
  • Record attendance, issue reminders for refresher cycles, and provide accessible options for locums or agency staff.
  • Run short scenario discussions at safeguarding meetings to reinforce how concerns present in primary care.

Strengthen partnership working

  • Share learning through PCN safeguarding forums and agree how intelligence flows between practices.
  • Build relationships with local schools, youth services, and police Prevent leads for joint awareness sessions.
  • Review information sharing agreements and consent handling to make sure referrals follow the correct legal basis.

Evidence your readiness

  • Maintain a Prevent action log tracking training coverage, referrals, advice sought, and lessons learned.
  • Store anonymised case summaries that demonstrate proportionate decision making and follow up actions.
  • Keep communications to staff, including updated contact sheets and training reminders, in a central location for inspection.
